1 Peter 1:17–19 17If you call on him as Father who judges impartially according to each one’s deeds, conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile, 18knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, 19but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.

We call upon our Father in heaven each time we pray.  Our prayers sometimes come when we are in need, in panic, or angry about what has happened to us or a loved one.  Of which all things deserve prayer but mostly when we are praying from our faith rather than from our earthly heart.  And every prayer regardless, should begin with thanks and praise to our one true God.

Prayer is always a good means to communicate with our Father in heaven.  But prayer is not the only way to communicate with our Father in heaven.  True worship is also a way to communicate with God our Father and yet there is still another way to communicate.  We can communicate by showing our Father in heaven how truly grateful we are on days that go well for us and on days that do not go well for us.  We also communicate through the actions of how we live our lives for God.

Now communicating with God is best done in fear, humility and respect for the one who can create and destroy at the use of a word.  If we put all these true means of communications together maybe we can communicate in all sincerity knowing our Father in heaven is listening, watching and paying attention to us.

We are always in exile as we are trying to leave our sinful nature behind.  Like those brought out of Egypt, we need the help of God as we cannot escape our fate that sin wants to give us on our own.  Our Father in heaven whom Jesus taught us to pray to helped those who were brought out of the captivity of Egypt.  And now the Father through His Son Jesus Christ helps us escape our captivity of sin.

Our freedom was not bought with gold or silver which can perish in a hot furnace.  Our freedom was bought with the eternal blood of the perfect unblemished lamb, Jesus Christ.  Jesus gave up His body and blood for all, but those who believe will reap the benefits of His forgiveness poured out for all.

1 Peter 1:20–21 20He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was made manifest in the last times for your sake, 21who through him are believers in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.

God walked with those who were rescued from the tyranny of Egypt and its Pharoh.  God still walks with us through His Son, the Holy Spirit, and the very word of God has given us.  With this formula of Father, Son, Holy Spirit, and word we are brought into faith by God’s will and testimony.

The testimony God speaks is that of repentance and forgiveness.  We are still prisoners to sin no matter how hard we might try to escape from it.  We just cannot save ourselves because our sin is stronger.  But we can take the word of God to heart and realize the deep love God has for us as He was willing to let His Son die for our sins.  Taking God’s word to heart means we do not give up the fight against our sin and the race to outrun our sin.  Remember, Jesus died for all sin, past, present, and future.

In all sincerity we should have an unconditional love for our Lord Jesus Christ as He has an unconditional love for us.  After all, Jesus died for us and paid the ransom that frees us from sin and death.  This is the greatest act of love, and only our Lord and savior is able to give this kind of love.

1 Peter 1:22–23 22Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart, 23since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God;

We can be obedient to the truth which is Jesus Christ.  Jesus says in John 14:6 He is the way, the truth, and the life.  Jesus is the truth that sets us free.   So, as we cannot stop sinning, we can be obedient to the truth through faith that Jesus died and was resurrected for our sake.  In other words, this is obedience to the gospel.

Jesus showed us brotherly love through His sacrifice to us so that we can show brotherly love towards one another.  This brotherly love is not a love that puts others down or boasts that one is a greater believer than another or that one accuses one of not believing.  This brotherly love that Jesus shows us is the love that holds us up, to hold each other up, that all may be saved hand in hand.  Loving one another then means we should always help one another believe and grow faith in Jesus Christ, Christ crucified.

This brotherly love Jesus shows us is the rebirth, born again salvation that is shared as it takes us, who used to be perishable, and makes us imperishable.  And the best part of this is that you or I, are not the judge but that Jesus’ death and resurrection is the judge as it brings forgiveness and life eternal.

1 Peter 1:24–25 24for “All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls, 25but the word of the Lord remains forever.” And this word is the good news that was preached to you.

We were like the grass that withers and dies, and the flower whose peddles fall.  But because of Jesus Christ our flesh is the only part that dies, and our spirit and soul receives yet another real born-again new body in our everlasting relationship with our Lord Jesus Christ who gifts us with eternal life with Him.  Amen.
