John 9:39–41 39Jesus said, “For judgment I came into this world, that those who do not see may see, and those who see may become blind.” 40Some of the Pharisees near him heard these things, and said to him, “Are we also blind?” 41Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, you would have no guilt; but now that you say, ‘We see,’ your guilt remains.”

Jesus speaks to the man He healed from being blind at birth and now can see.  Those of the world, in this case the Pharisees, had questioned the now seeing blind man.  These Pharisees are blinded by their ignorance of God’s word caused by their want for all power over the people whom they should be serving.

What’s interesting is that the Pharisees that overheard Jesus talking to the healed blind man are tricked into confessing their guilt.  Their blindness is in their hearts and their mind’s eye as they refuse to see the truth who is Jesus Christ.  Self-righteousness will do that to a person.

Jesus came to open the eyes of those who have been blinded by their self-righteous influencers.  As our Lord opens our eyes, He closes the eyes of those completely blinded by their need to feel superior to others.  Jesus did not come to make us feel inferior to Him.  Jesus came to give us comfort through showing us a God who knows how to empathize with us.  We have a God who can care for us at our level.  We have a God who understands our struggles and frustrations.

Isaiah 42:14–15 14For a long time I have held my peace; I have kept still and restrained myself; now I will cry out like a woman in labor; I will gasp and pant.  15I will lay waste mountains and hills, and dry up all their vegetation; I will turn the rivers into islands, and dry up the pools.

We see the patience of God in our world today which is greater than our own patience.  We have heard many say I wish Jesus would come right now.  Yet the coming of Jesus will not be from our command or our desperation.  Jesus will come again but not until the time that His patience cannot stop His coming into the world.  It is like giving birth once it starts it cannot be stopped.  And when Jesus comes again, He will set things straight in His way through His will.

This is the gasp and the pant as our Lord continues to watch our world’s recklessness and stupidity.  Yes, as our Lord watches our personal recklessness and our personal stupidity.  We sit idly by watching our world leaders and world influencers lead us astray and we do nothing to combat it.  We are prisoners of our complacency.  And less do we care.

Soon the rivers of influence will dry up and become islands that will interrupt their flow of influence.  Soon the high and mighty leaders will lose their magnitude of power like mountains laid waste and hills that no longer have meaning.  The nourishment of the powerful will dry up, and no power will they have over others.

Isaiah 42:16 16And I will lead the blind in a way that they do not know, in paths that they have not known  I will guide them.  I will turn the darkness before them into light, the rough places into level ground.  These are the things I do, and I do not forsake them.

As for those who allowed themselves to be blinded by the worldly ways.  God will lead us in ways we have not been taught as the world tried to hide God from us.  The paths will be reopened, and our Lord will lead us through what now has been unknown to us.  But we can rejoice in that the darkness the world forced upon us will be overtaken by the Light of our Lord Jesus Christ.

On this path that our Lord will lead us through He will make sure there are no rough places for us to stumble over.  The path will be made clean, and we will grow in confidence with our Lord.  And comfort will come in the words of our Lord who claims again that He will not forsake us.  Jesus will not forsake the children of God!

Isaiah 42:17–18 17They are turned back and utterly put to shame, who trust in carved idols, who say to metal images, “You are our gods.”  18Hear, you deaf, and look, you blind, that you may see!

Trust God, He is telling us a truth that will withstand every argument.   False idols and manmade idols even of flesh and bone cannot do those things that only a real God can do.  False God’s at best can influence you to worship them; however, your worship is in vain for the false idols cannot and will not give you the free gifts that our true and only God can.

Isaiah 42:19–21 19Who is blind but my servant, or deaf as my messenger whom I send?  Who is blind as my dedicated one, or blind as the servant of the Lord?  20He sees many things, but does not observe them; his ears are open, but he does not hear.  21The Lord was pleased, for his righteousness’ sake, to magnify his law and make it glorious.

Unlike the Pharisees, Sadducees, and Scribes, Jesus was not blinded by power or even being God as He is our only one true God.  Jesus suffered for all where the Pharisees and others wouldn’t suffer even for a few.  Jesus died taking our sins upon Himself where leaders would not.

Jesus was resurrected where the Pharisees and others could not as they are not gods.  Jesus opened the door to salvation for all who are not blinded by the world.  Jesus saves the believer without measuring their belief.  Jesus gives us eternal life where no one and not even the world can ever do.  Jesus is the one true God in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

Amen.
